How Rural Schooling Shaped Me

I went to two different high schools due to having to move at the end of my grade 10 year. I started in a larger collegiate in a class of about 100 students. These were students that I had went to school with for most of the years with the addition of about twenty new students which came in grade 9. The highschool I graduated from was a much smaller k-12 school. I had a class of 11 students, with 2 of them not graduating. I enjoyed my experience in this school due to having the small classes and being such good friends with everyone in the class since you are with them 24/7. As well I was very comfortable right from the beginning to become engaged in extra curriculars such as student council and social justice. The downfall to this school was the actual schoolwork in some cases. We did not have the access to many courses because we did not have the teachers or interest in those classes. Many classes we were limited to when we could take them (ie: chemistry 30 and 40 one year, and the next year bio 30 and 40). Even without the classes offered in school we did get the opportunity for some classes through video conference. Almost my entire grade 12 year was through video conference. This made learning the material harder, especially for some class which had labs; though it limited us to sitting in the classroom doing book work for all of those days. It was an opportunity to meet new people (through a screen) and allowed us in the class to work together to answer our own questions.
